Bryan Cerro Ceramics

I’m Bryan, a Milwaukee-based, self-taught ceramic artist working from my basement studio and a local community studio where I fire my work. While my path into ceramics hasn’t been a traditional one, it is driven by curiosity, persistent experimentation, and a willingness to let the material lead me somewhere unexpected.

In 2024, while immersed in Physician Assistant school, I enrolled in a six-week pottery class and found myself drawn to the humbling honesty of clay. It’s a material that doesn’t always cooperate with intention, demands patience, and rewards persistence. What began as a brief creative diversion quickly became a lasting practice and an ongoing exploration of form, texture, and material.

My work is deeply influenced by the natural world, particularly the branching geometry of coral, the quiet complexity of organic forms, and the textures found where water and earth meet. I’m drawn to surfaces that feel as though they have been shaped by time and natural processes. Through experimentation with glaze chemistry and firing, I explore reactions that bloom across ceramic surfaces, creating intricate patterns reminiscent of moss, lichen, and algae.

Some pieces are made to be lived with and used; others exist simply as sculptural objects. Across both, I embrace the unpredictability of the process, allowing variations, irregularities, and unexpected outcomes to become part of the finished work. I’m interested in the space between intention and chance, where imperfection isn't a flaw to be corrected, but an essential part of the work itself.
